Great Shot Matt, although I would've used a slightly longer exposure to increase the water flow, now it just looks like unsharpness.

I received my 15mm (SMC version) yesterday and I'm already in love, also first shot = first starburst

Actually, melt water is 39 degrees F, the highest density before freezing. Flowing melt water at slow speeds actually looks precisely like Matt's image. The water will appear viscous, surface blurred by the overlaid slightly warmer water. The photo captures the reality of spring breakup without the unnecessary five second shutter speeds so commonly used on summer water. A longer shutter speed would have ruined the shot, in my opinion. I have watched ice melt and streams begin flowing for all of sixty seven years. I know melt water.

And apparently i don't . We don't really have fast flowing rivers here so I don't think I've ever seen flowing water at that temperatures in real live.

I agree a tad longer exposure would probably have looked better. It was a fleeting light moment and that is what I came away with so it will have to do.
I usually like just a little more motion blur too.
The water does get a kind of viscus look to it when on the verge of freezing but I tend to notice that more as it's getting colder in the fall instead of warmer in the spring.

Nice, one of the best northern lights shots I have seen. Reminds me of when I was in Alaska and saw the lights for the first time directly overhead, was amazed at how fast they were moving.

Thank you dunerunner and Pablom!

I usually use the DA12-24 for Northern Lights, although my very favourite aurora lens is the FA*24/2 because of its beautiful rendering of the Light. 24mm is not wide enough on aps-c for Northern Lights, so I am very eager to test the lens on a future digital Pentax full frame. I purchased the DA15 some months ago, and have not really had a chance to test it with Northern Lights before the occurance on the 17 March. I was hoping the DA15 would have some of the qualities I so much like with the FA24, and although the lens must be stopped down to f5.6 to reduce koma (avoid strange looking stars in the borders) the DA15 impressed me lot. I believe I prefer the rendering and contrast of the DA15 to the DA12-24 for Northern Lights. So to all the people who write off the DA15 for Northern Lights photography - The DA15 can be used with great success also for auroras, as long as you know how to set up the camera and lens in a best possible way.
