Square crop mode?

I've seen some users use it in square crop mode on the k-1.
The APS-C crop mode frame on the ff K-1 is rectangular, not square, and the image produced appears to be the same rectangular shape as the same lens setting would have produced on an APS-C camera such as the K-3. So, when you speak of a square crop mode are you referring to something else, perhaps the "after-capture" cropping function accessed via what I call the on camera "OK 4-way pad" after taking via the the photo. I am sorry to be so dense, but simply trying to understand exactly is meant here.

I once posted this. Some time after that K-1 "learned" (by firmware update) the Square Mode which is basically FF vertical sensor height in square. Today I use this mode with DA15 (always shooting raw), crop the image slightly to get rid of a bit dark corners and get ~74° in width and height.

I love square mode anyway. It would be worth having new firmware to have that on the K-1. Unfortunately, I lost $300 bricking a K-7 last time I tried to upgrade firmware, and have not tried again since then! Thanks for the education.

Nope - See below.

This is a 24x24mm sensor mode enabled in firmware on the K-1. As mentioned below additional slight cropping may be needed.

Thanks!

The other thing to recall is that a 74 degree wide shot is no wider than the crop mode but the vertical and diagonal measurements are expanded. The 74 degree width is essentially the same as the crop factor would suggest - the width is the same as you would get with the FA* 24. The FA 20 and the DFA 15-30 are going to be able to give much wider views.

Few pictures from Retezat National Park. I didn't have any other wide angle lens available at that time, so I was using DA 15 on the K-1 in crop mode to spare some time at processing.

During the first couple hours of Winter Storm Stella, straight out of the camera. New desktop and haven't installed LR yet. Also posted on the Just Black and White-ur B/W Monochrome photos here thread.

One from the beach on Saturday. Difficult to process the colors here, I considered using B+W but ended up with this:

Decent winter sunset. Sometimes they're bland, sometimes we get some vivid color.
