Vivitar Series 1 Zoom Lens 70-210mm 3.5

I'd like to post some examples, but I'm afraid that my lens may not be working correctly. Can any of you weigh in on what I'm doing wrong or if the lens is not working correctly? I'd love a dummy/sanity check to see if it's operator error. Problem:

When the lens is off the camera, the aperture clicks properly. I can see it get smaller/wider when I turn the ring. However, pictures never seem to reflect the changed aperture. It always seems to have a fixed (wider) aperture setting. When I put it on f/22 the depth of field is still shallow.

Do any of you know what's going wrong? Thanks very much for any advice.

Try switching it to manual.

Hiya, thanks for the response! I have an older school (Tokina based?) version without the fancy macro switch nor "A" setting, unfortunately. Any other thoughts?

Sorry. Mine is a M42-mount. A K-Mount probably wouldn't have the A/M-switch. I've no idea.

A couple of things need to be done in order to use this lens with your camera:
  • Confirm that using aperture ring is set to permitted in custom settings menu
  • Put the camera in "M" (manual exposure) mode. Any other mode will always shoot wide open.
  • Set the desired aperture
  • Use the "green" button (or equivalent for your body) to set the shutter speed
  • Take your photo
You may have to manually adjust the shutter speed up or down to fine tune the exposure.

This one taken at work. Those are 3-4inch wide balcony palings. K02.

Male Hercules moth - largest species of Australian moth - female is bigger. - blundering around in the daylight having been disturbed by heavy rain - a little bit of damage to the feelers is visible.

A Bug ( I think a Stink Bug!!) taken with Viv Ser 1 105mm Macro on K20d. A top rating Macro lens, among the best IMHO.

Bug is about 1/2 inch long.

I would have loved a bit of sun to brighten it up a bit, but was a very dull cloudy day.

Last week a friend literally GAVE me an M42 version of this lens w/ 55mm filter threads. I haven't even mounted it yet, much less taken a photo, but if this beautiful image is what is possible I'm taking it out this weekend.

Funny. I also got mine for free from ebay - the seller somehow made a mistake and sent it my way after sending me the lens I purchased from them. Then he told me to keep it.

I was surprised with it - it's pretty sharp even wide open, has nice contrast, and I like how it blurs the backgrounds.
