Vivitar T4 250mm f4.5

I recently acquired this uncommon classic vivitar. It's a classy tokina made T4 swappable mount, which I have modded slightly so that a TX PK mount will work (see here ). There are also 200mm f3.5 and 300mm f5.5/5.6 ones with exactly the same style: ribbed focus, tripod mount, T4 mount. I have posted pics from the former here.

These are also found as soligors - review page here . Tokina (all the T4/TX lenses are made by tokina, 37xxxxx {vivitars} and 16xxxx or 17xxxx {soligor} serials) seemed to have a thing for heavy duty metal 'n glass lenses in the late 1970's. Lenses like the weighty 2 ring 70-210mm f3.5 are, I believe, from this time as well.
So for what or who is 250mm for? Maybe for someone who can't decide between 200mm or 300mm?
Certainly a very decent optic.

The Faraway is one of the plusher yachts in the estuary but it is now looking sadly neglected!

Looking at the auto jpg's from the RAW's in faststone I am impressed with the consistency of the lens - good sharp images straight from f4.5. Crops off the RAW do show softer and lower contrast at f4.5 however.

F4.5, pentax KS2.

Crops.

Looks good. I usually avoid third-party telephoto lenses, especially slower ones, but this might be one worth keeping an eye open for.

I was given a 'K' fit Vivitar 200mm f3.5 by a Camera Club Friend -- I have tested it with BW but recently took it out on my MZ-5 loaded with outdated Fuji Superia 200 rated 125 ASA and home-processed in C41 . I used it mostly at f5.6 and a few at f8 - It IS sharp at f3.5 though as I found with the B&W film tests.

Vivitar (komine) 400mm f5.6 review.

See review section for the full write up.

I took a long time to find a PK mount version of this lens - for a good price, that is. Eventually I acquired one cheaply but with fungus, and it sat in my to-do box until I recently took the plunge and set to it. I had been put off by a forum thread by a guy who had failed to reassemble his. In the end, I don't know what his problem was, I had none, see here. There is always a small question as to whether the reassembled lens is corrrect and therefore representative, all I can say is that the performance seems absolutely par in comparison to a couple of other (non-pk) examples of this lens from which I have sample pics taken with my mirrorless cameras.
Test crops (K3-ii):

Vivitar 105mm f2.8 macro

I went to the bird reserve to take some flower pics with the vaunted vivitar 105mm macro, tripod, beanbag and my KS-2 - the fully articulated lcd is very useful for this.

Wild geranium - the flowers are les than 10mm across

Hawthorn

Elderflower

Underexposed to really bringout the blue

Very nice results. I think I have the same lens but it's packed away somewhere due to having slow aperture blades.

Thank you Jonathan......thats a shame about the blades......it's a good lens that i have not used much but pairing it with KSX is working nicely and likely be placed on other manual bodies

I could use it on my mirrorless cameras but as it's not fully functional it's not with my main lens collection so gets forgotten about. I don't remember what I paid for it but it was cheap, I think 25 or so. I should look into how much it wouls cost to rectify, but it would be a lot more than that I'm sure.
