Nice set--the last is a hoot!
Thanks, I used to shoot community events as part of my job and this was the first one I'd done since I retired five years ago, it's good to be an amateur

Hiking with K-50/Sigma 17-50 near Cape Spear, Newfoundland

I like the detail and in the plant closeups at higher zoom.

Nice colors, but not quite the detail I'd like at 17mm. Am I doing something wrong???

There is also barrel distortion you can see in the sea/sky line. Could remove this but have not yet.

What f-stop were you using and where was your focus point?

First 17mm pic: f4, focus point was main lighthouse.
Second 17mm pic: f3.2, focus point taken on farthest rock before final composition.

Clicking on pics shows a goodly amount of exif info from the album system.

H'mmm thot I had it stopped down more. Do I have to make that climb again? :-(

Well, the light house may be sharp as a tack but how would a viewer tell? What dominates the image is the brush in the foreground which, of course, is not in focus so the general impression is one of softness. So, yeah, get back up there, shoot at f7.1, focus on that rock in the center and see what happens.

Think of it this way: at that distance, you're not really taking a photo of the lighthouse, you're photographing a scene with--oh yeah--a lighthouse in the distance. If you want a photo of the light house, skip the climb and get closer to the lighthouse.

No...I was going for a big country effect at this point but did not have my normal 10-20 lens I use for such things.

From the East Coast Trail guide...

"A scenic climb and descent [111meters, 3.7 KM (one way)], rough underfoot, great views back to the cliffs of Southside Hills, Cabot Tower and on to Cape Spear and the Cape Spear lighthouses. Note this path has mostly low growth and is very exposed to weather (think fog, wind, rain)"

Beautiful scenery, but, well, this is when you are still .7 km from the road and still 70 meters up (i.e., 10% gradient ). That little black thingy where the road enters the trees is my car! I am 64 tomorrow. Guess I'll keep getting my exercise! Probably what I'll do is take both the 17-50 and 10-20 Sigmas up there and see/experiment. The 17-50 is a new lens.

I can't tell whether the car is sharp but it looks like a great place.

As teenager I've made that trek many times and the scenery is just as spectacular from the water.

On a recent trip to Europe, the versatility of the Sigma 18-200 made it my go-to lens. It hardly came off the camera.
