A few with a 28-200 3.5-5.6 which I acquired for $22.00. I think it is similar to the one in the legacy Sigma reviews. No red ring on this lens. No creep at all. Not bad for the price. Lots of cropping.

After posting, it appears that one of these (the first) is with my Pentax A 50/1.7. Sorry about that.

I just unearthed some pictures I took a few years ago when I was first testing the 18-200 (C). At the time the only superzoom I'd been satisfied with was the Panasonic 14-140 3.5-5.6, but I wanted to consolidate (again) to a single mount instead of carrying m4/3 for travel and Pentax for fun and special events.

As you can guess from my other posts in this thread, I was quite happy with it and sold the Panasonic not long after.

Hi all,

I've got a 50-500 f/4-6.3 APO (NON OS) on it's way to me from Japan. I won an eBay auction on uit.. As I have a K-1 I didn't think I'd need the version with OS. What's the difference between the two aside from the optical stabilization and slighter larger aperture? Is the image quality the same? Will be be disappointed in this lens and wish I'd spent 3x the money for the 4.3 OS version?

I have the OS version with HSM. This is the current version for sale. The optical formula is different between the two. Some say the version with OS is sharper but I never found any direct evidence of it. The main difference is the optical stabilization and a newer multi coating on the elements. The newer version is also heavier due to the OS. Both versions use Special Low Dispersion Glass. I do not think there is a tremendous difference in the IQ between the two versions. My opinion is the current DG version has a tad warmer colors. They did reduce the minimum focus distance on the DG model which I found helpful.

*NOTES*
1. The 50-500 requires the Sigma mount modification to advoid scratching the body on your K-1. This is a free service provided by Sigma.
2. The 50-500 is big and heavy. I recommend a good sturdy tripod with gimbal or at least a heavy duty ball head.
3. It is possible to hand hold but I always tired out after about a hour.
4. The lens requires a lot of light. This is not a low light lens. You will be shooting with higher ISO's.
5. The lens needs to be stopped down for best IQ, F8-F11.
6. The 50-500 does not hold too well to heavy crops. Try getting as close to your subject as you can.
7. It can be a very rewarding and frustrating lens to use. It took awhile for me to get used to mine. It requires a whole new level of shooting style.

The OS is essentially redundant since the K-1 has such excellent SR already built in. You should be able to have a lot fun with your new Bigma.

Thanks for the information. I do have a good tripod/ball head combo, plus I'll get a video monopod for those times I can't use the tripod.Your lasy note is why I went for this one. I also felt that the OS redundant on the K-1.

I was unaware of # 1. Do they also update the firmware in the lens at the same time? How can I tell if the lens already had the modification. How instantaneous is the scratch? Will I see it as soon as I put the lens on the camera, or is it more of a gradual thing?

I'm not aware of a firmware update. There is one for the 70-200 since those lenses had autofocus issues. The scratch is minimal at best. Some users have never sent there's in and used the lens in in its current state.

I checked the Sigma site and it appears the original 50-500 is not part of this issue. So you should be fine. I apologize, I should have checked first. Apparently the addition of the OS system cause an increase in size on the current model.

The original Pentax Forums article can be found here. Sigma Announces Lens Compatibility Issues with K-1 - Third-Party Announcements | PentaxForums.com

Enjoy your new lens.

Sigma EX APO 70-200mm f/2.8 yesterday. This was only the second time I've had a chance to play with this lens since I bought it but I like the results so far.
