Sigma 30/1.4 EX DC on K-S2

f/2, 1/100s, ISO 500

Always

f/4, 1/1000s, ISO 2500

Iacta alea est.

Focussing is difficult wide open, will have to fiddle with focus adjustment to figure out if something is wrong. But from f/2 it's a joy to use and I really like the angle of view on APS-C. Putting the FA 31 for use on APS-C and the FA 43 for an eventually one day coming K-1 into my mind

Went for a walk in the park today, carrying the K-5iis + Sigma 135/2.8 Pantel. Wasn't expecting to see much wildlife but I was mistaken. I stumbled upon a Mallard couple, in what I believe was a nesting area. Also, caught one in flight. Could have used a longer lens but you work with what you have.

Some babboon photos with the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX.

This was far and away my most used lens on a trip to the zoo on Saturday and overall I'm happy with how it performed. This was the first chance I've had to give the lens a good work-out and it was ideal for the job. Sometimes the focus was very slightly off, leading to some softness, but when focus was bang on the results are very sharp. I mostly used it at f/4 and f/4.5.

Sounds like a great lens choice for a zoo visit. I am pretty much a prime lens user, and once made the mistake of taking a too-long lens, 300mm maybe, for the visit. I wound up mainly with tusks and tails! Next time I took the M200 and fouind it pretty close to perfect. I think I will relent and take a zoomer next time, even though I only have a few cheap ones.

I did consider taking the K 200mm f/4 as it's a lot smaller and lighter than the Sigma, but I rarely have the occasion to use the Sigma and I did buy it for just these sort of occasions so it seemed silly not to take it. Plus I can't manually focus on the K-3 nearly well as I could on my K200D with Katzeye screen. I probably used the Sigma much more at the long end than at the short, but I had the DA 70mm with me, which got a small amount of use, and could have managed with that for shorter stuff, albeit with some lens swapping.

A few more from the trip.

Great zoo shots, wondering what that animal in the middle shot is, a dog?
