A shot at the wide end of the SMC DA55-300 on the K-1 in FF mode. Very slightly cropped because of vignetting.

From Namibia with the SMC DA 55-300, posted in the K-5 "No more tests" thread, too.

Some hyenas trying to save what's left of their springbok kill.

This lion chased off the hyenas to get some breakfast. Not much left, though.

Nice shots! Seems like you were pretty close to the action - were you using a TC?

Thanks! We'weren't too far off. One of the great thing with Etosha national park is that it is very dry (most of the year) so that the game tend to congregate on the water holes. Some of these you can get quite close to by car. If you get up early and leave camp as soon as they let you out (around sunrise) you will be pretty much alone for maybe an hour or so before the lazy guys get out of their sleeping bags They miss both the best light and the best action. The next car on the scene here never saw the hyenas at all. They probably assumed that the lion had killed the springbok.

The images are slightly cropped, though, the lion shots more than the hyena shot, but no TC. I didn't have a TC at the time, and I can't really see any advantage using it on the 55-300 anyway. Come to think of it I have tried that only on the K-3. Could be that it would provide better results with the lower pixel pitch of the K-5/K-1. One more thing to find out

It feels like an eternity since I've gotten a decent bird shot. Here are two I finally got around to processing from last April, taken with the HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR:

(western gulls, I believe)
