CR, Paul and others with a 16-45. That lens rocks(pun intended) I love my copy. It was a gift and I will never get rid of it so I'm tied to Pentax forever.

I've been tied to Pentax since 1961. There has been a bit of envy over this or that other brand from time to time, but never enough to switch to any other system.

Some using other systems don't look down on Pentax. My recent trip to Elk Island was fun and I met a man at the bison enclosure from Köln in Germany. He was rather more flush financially than I have ever been and travels all over with his kit: 3 full frame Nikons, all recent. He had the 24-70 on one, the 70-300 on another and the lust inducing 500 with 1.4x on a tripod. His comment about Pentax was that the mount was much better than Nikon's. So much for brand envy.

I don't say "forever" but Pentax is good for me, and the 16-45 is a big part of it. It's sharp from wide open, and sharp basically like primes for the entire range. The rendering that it brings isn't as "natural" or "accurate" to the actual scene, but it has (in my humble opinion) a Zeiss-like enhancement of colors and contrast. Add to that a minimal focusing distance that is much shorter than advertised - it's sharp from there to infinity. And I use flashes so I could care less that the zoom barrel comes out for wide angle.

I've often considered selling another guitar to buy a "better" lens like the DA* 16-50 (which can be had for just over 300 when converted to screw drive) but it flares badly and isn't really sharp at f/2.8 - and does not render more nicely than the 16-45 stopped down. Or the Sigma 17-50 2.8 which these days can be had or 200 dollars, and is by all accounts a great zoom, but doesn't give that Zeiss-like character, either. To me it's one of Pentax's true gems.

Here's a couple more.

I bought the *16-50 with camera in 2007, so that's the one I use for that range. I agree with the down sides, but it sure is a handy walk around lens for me.

Paul, that's nasty posting all those lovely shots of flowers and green stuff and trees that haven't broken down because of a foot of heavy wet snow we got last Tuesday.

CR, from time to time I look at those you mention(also the Sigma 17-70) and say nah.. Yes, Pentax forever although I have a toe in on the dark side. I have a Canon 40D. Again I was given a Canon lens so I got the 40D, a 2005 model for $150.00 from KEH...only 33,000 clicks. I use it with a Canon EFS 55-250 IS ll.

A very nice mid-60's VW seen at the Coppell TX car show last month. I'm thinking it's a '66? My '68 had pop-out rear windows like this one. DA16-45 on K10D:
