I did what every sane person would do in that situation: position myself safely under a tree and put my tripod there
The thunderstorm went by in a safe distance and although I had to wipe some raindrops from the front lens every few minutes (with my t-shirt, because I saw the crazy "golden hour and storm coming around" light, packed my camera with two (non-WR
) lenses and a tripod and went out), I never even had to worry about the non-WR lens to get wet.
Here's the most defined flash that found its way to my sensor:
