A Real Town Garden

Look what I found tucked away amongst the old buildings of Edinburgh, where a wee shaft of light does manage to get through.

THis' a beautiful shot.

@Kerrowdown @jcdoss - any tips on shooting strangers in the street? I cannot bring myself to it, and have seen some very interesting subjects, but I'm held back... even in a big city.

Thanks for the compliment, but it's something I don't do often. When I do, I usually use longer focal lengths and try to be clandestine about it. If I get busted, I will strike up a conversation and remind them that they are in a public space and I can photograph them all day long if I want to as my legal right. Actually, that's wrong.. the conversation is usually a non-verbal request for permission (a smile and a wave with my camera), and I usually get a friendly reply. I did see one guy try to do the same, photographing a guy across the street. This guy got the bird for about a solid minute, but it seemed not to deter the photographer.

It's probably easier to do in larger cities, because despite dire predictions of the future of cameras, I see a lot of cameras going around, and an increasing number of film units.

Thank you, assuming you did mean me.

Good grief and you live in NYC... probably one of the most interesting cities in the world for "street" photography, more colourful characters per square inch than anywhere else.

My technique is simple, just be bold and take the image, smile at the folk after you've got 'em if they make eye contact, don't be furtive or sulk in the shadows, it comes across as underhand or you've something to hide. I've even seen me wear on occasion a "high vis" waistcoat, so that it looks like I'm supposed to be there, doing what I'm doing.

You could always ask permission or strike up a conversation first before taking the image, but this can lead to more false facial expressions and of course the odd knock back too.

I normally use my "Street Lady" (Pentax-A 28mm F2.8) prefocused at about ten feet @F8.0.

A quote by Robert Capa which I think applies to street work..."If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough"

There's a a whole thread here on the forum which you may find to be of interest on this very subject.

I recently bought a Pentax M Takumar Bayonet mount 135mm to use with my K-1. I am very happy with the results [IMG][/IMG] and [IMG][/IMG] in comparison, these were taken with an M42 Takumar 135 mm (on K-5)[IMG][/IMG] and [IMG][/IMG]
