I like the B&W version best, too.

Dani, Great shot, dof is perfect!

Alan, man, I can't choose between the color or the B&W, stunning shot either way.

B&W is the better one hands down.

Vivitar 135mm close focusing in autumn

Time to post something here again.

Hinmans Vivitar 135mm f2.8 close focusing (1:2) Komine built lens has got a new home (http://www.techtheman.com/2008/09/vivitar-135mm-f28-12-macro-from-komine.html)

This is a lens that I've been hoping someone would post on this thread and I've been looking for a copy for myself for quite a long time.

Autumn is far gone here and most bugs are dead or at sleap. We have rimfrost most mornings and even had some snow last week. So macro subjects are a bit limited. Yet, this is what I came up with. Most of them at f2.8 to f4.

@Douglas, @Doug, thanks very much. Here's the color version:

I had a bunch of new(-ish) glass to try out on that shoot but I think that 135 still wins it as my favorite outdoor portrait lens.
I'm surprised to see no bokeh fringing. What was the aperture approximately?

Douglas, all the hard work in our transaction seems to pay off. I am so delighted to see my lens in good use by my friend. I will miss it for sure. The lens works well for me also on bugs as I recall a greater minimum focusing distance. And its bokeh is quite unique and nice.

I suspect that the lens may work well in film camera as the old K mount don't require the extra step into stop-down metering. I like all of my past M/K lenses on the pentax film bodies.

Warmest,
Hin

Thanks Hin!
I'm very hapy with the lens so far. Besides having too few bugs this time of the year (which I can't blame Vivitar for), my only complain is the lens cap. It only took 2-3 days until it fell off and hit a rough enough floor to leave a mark on its edge. A pity since both lens and cap was in near perfect conditions. But it isn't the first time I've had that problem with Vivitar lens caps. It's a simple construction kept in place only by friction. I bet that while Komine built the lens, Vivitar got the cap from some other source. The lens itself is built like a tank.

It looks like it has a very pleasing bokeh. Also appears to be quite flare resistant. The first water drop is taken almost straight into the sun, wide open with no lens hood. Need to get a hood though. While I haven't managed to provoce any flare yet, contrast goes down in that sort of conditions. Otherwise it is fairly sharp already at f2.8, even though it, as all lenses, sharpen up more if I close down ~2 steps. What lens hood did you use?

Sure, I'll try it out on some of my film bodies. Have a fettish for black bodies: KX, K2, MX, ME Super, LX, Super A, Program A, all in black. Think the K2 or LX should balance this 135mm well.

Douglas, I didn't use it with a lens hood at the time that I used this prime. I think you should find a round metal lens hood and a better cap. Yes, the Vivitar metal cap is not what I will prefer using. In US, I often rely on a reputable store by the name of heavystar in ebay. I searched in the store with 62mm metal lens hood that comes with a matching 67mm cap on the other end of the lens hood for you.

62mm lens hood with a 67mm cap
New Metal Telephoto 62mm Screw-in Lens Hood + Cap - eBay (item 160425325744 end time Nov-14-10 20:51:54 PST)

And if you need a matching pinch lens cap that may work well with the prime, I will look for something like this cap

62mm center pinch cap
New 2 x 62mm Center Pinch Snap-on Lens Cap Set - eBay (item 360268519641 end time Oct-29-10 18:19:03 PDT)

By the way, I really like the frosty pictures on the leaves. I think you should give this lens a work out on people as well because I am very surprised with its performance and usage in a wedding

Thanks!
Hin

No, don't get any of those just yet.

I'll update this post with photos tonight. I think you'll like what you see.

Update: Here's the hood for the Vivitar 135mm Close-Focusing: a 62-49mm step down adapter ring, and a Pentax 49mm metal hood (originally for Takumar 50/55mm 1.8/2.0 lenses). The cap is a 49mm pinch cap from Deal Extreme (about US$ 2 shipped). I attached two small strips of self-adhesive sandpaper to the center pinch of the cap to make it easier to grasp when it's inside the hood):
