That dragonflyshot is so crispy, and the kid-portraits are excellent.

maybe NSFW?

maybe NSFW? I guess it depends on where you "W"

you don't have to be a kid to like playing in the sprinkler on a hot summer day...

Pentax F 135mm F/2.8

Ok so i've had it for a couple of days now, so i've got some decent shots to share....

Here's one to start with:

edit: and another

This is a LARGE crop of a fly mid flight @ the lenses MFD @ F/2.8 in VERY harsh light.
This is my first attempt at using AFC and i am very impressed when using a lens that Auto focuses so fast.

edit 2: and another

"bubbles"

@ F/2.8

The other night I attended an outdoor concert by Latin Jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri. I knew the venue was large enough where I'd want something longer than my usual M135/3.5, and well lit enough to use my DA50-200, so I planned to bring the latter. However, I accidentally grabbed my 18-55 instead (!), so I ended up with the 135 as my longest lens after all. Luckily, it was possible to get reasonably close to the stage to shoot at this concert (wasn't the case last time I was there). Vantage points weren't great, but you work with what you have. Here's a few shots:

WOW!!! Great shots Marc. I would have thought you would be using a 300 f2.8 to get that much detail. Did you crop and resize those very much at all? The pictures are so clear, sharp with great color. Good Job,
Alan W.

Alan & Co, you are giving me LBA for that F/FA 135.

Picked up my own copy of the notorius Takumar (Bayonet) from a less fancy antique store during my vacation. Payed about 20USD. Regret that I didn't buy the M135 they were selling for about 12USD. I mean, I already have it, but I could have passed it on to someone else. Obviously they had no idea of the lenses relative value. I had to restrain myself or I could have walked out of there with a whole box full of lenses.

Took the Takumar (Bayonet) 135mm f2.5 on a walk on the campus. It is indeed very soft wide open, so all these shots are at f5.6 or more.

I should add that our students don't normally look like this, at least not all the time. The science students where welcomming this years new students.

I like the colors, the red and grean, as they come out. Stopped down it's not so bad, a 135mm on a budget. But don't believe the e-bay sellers who try to make it sound like it is the equivalent of the K135/2.5, and don't expect to really get much usefull out from it wide open. I will give it a 2nd chance though wide open with one of the big metal shades from my m42 takumars. The built in hood on this Takumar (bayonet) is quite small.

I had tried this lens before Douglas, and as you said, it is nothing like the K135/2.5 by a longshot and I could understand why it is being sold at such a pricepoint. I don't really like the colors and the bokeh doesn't look that pleasing. honestly, it would had it's ass handed down by the Pentacon 135/2.8. I'm going to do a 3 lens shootout between the Pentacon, Pentax FA135 and DA55-300 soon.

Thanks! Some of these are cropped a little for composition, as I mentioned I didn't have the greatest vantage points, but mostly they are resized for web display. The thing is, at high ISO - these are all ISO 1600, and some are pushed up to a stop from there - I'm already way below the maximum possible resolution on my K200D. Doesn't take much for a lens to meet or exceed that. Meaning that there isn't a lot of visible difference between great lenses and merely quite good lenses at high ISO. That's nice, as it means I'm easily satisfied with inexpensive lenses like this.

Well, I mainly had horrific memories from borrowing my parents copy of the Takumar (bayonet) (one of the first lenses they bought when they jumped from m42's to Pentax K in the early 80's). But with that background it surpriced me that I managed to get a bunch of shots with it that made me happy. The bokeh isn't pleasent, just look at the bushes behind the boy/girl with the red hair, but stopped down it is sharp enough and the colors came out better than I remembered from color slides.

I'm also building up towards a shoot out of Pentax 135mm's. So far I have in m42: Auto-Takumar 135/3.5 (5 elements 4 groups), Super-Takumar 135/3.5 (4 elements 4 groups), Super-Takumar 135/2.5 (5 elements 4 groups), and in K-mount: SMC Pentax 135/2.5 (6 elements 6 groups), SMC Pentax 135/3.5 (4 elements 4 groups), SMC Pentax-M 135/3.5 (5 elements 5 groups), Takumar (Bayonet) 135/2.5 (4 elements 4 groups), SMC Pentax-A*135/1.8 (7 elements 6 groups). Somehow missplaced my Takumar 135/3.5 (5 elements 4 groups) but it is the same optics as the Auto-Takumar. There are many more versions of the Takumars, but with the same lens solutions, so I wont bother with them. Most of the glass I had since long, but after starting this thread I picked up the Auto-Takumar and the Takumar (bayonet) in an attempt to complete the familly. Missing the late Takumar bayonet and the SMC Pentax-A 135/2.8, but these are both the same optics as the Takumar (bayonet), though it may be interresting to see what difference the SMC coating makes. Definitely missing the F or FA 135/2.8 (8 elements in 7 groups, the only of Pentax optical forumlas for 135mm's that I miss). Also missing the original Asahi-Kogaku Tele-Takumar 135mm, but then I also need to find the 37mm-to-42mm adapter. That will be a challenge. But I could make a complete manual focus Pentax 135mm shoot out with every optical formula represented. Some day.
