Hey, even the ISO 51,200 shot would be useful at the kind of sizes people post photos in Blogspot or Flickr.
We've got a Pentax Night Vision camera now...

51200 doesn't always turn out decent... If the exposure isn't right it can turn bad pretty quickly.

So does 6400 on K20D and K-7 (more so K-7)

Here is my take on 25600ISO, with some masking and NR in Photoshop. I left some grain in.

I thinkby looking at what I came up with its easy for me to say 2.5 stops over K20D and possibly 3 over K-7. I feel that 51200 is comparable to 6400 on them both. and 25600 is better than them both.

By null at 2010-10-18

Great job on that one!
I was quite happy to find that 51200 was not purely a novelty.
Also... I can't comment enough on the quality of the noise patterns with this Pentax system(very impressive).

VERY_VERY GOOD from 80 till 800 without any NR in converter. 1600 is fine for me.
3200 and above are good with small NR in LR.

I think it would be usable in the studio.
I'd love to see some super resolution output from this system too!

PS. have you noticed that the ISO200 file retains more detail than the ISO100 and 80 variants? I think under the conditions, it might be better to aim for nominal if one is looking to squeeze every once of IQ out of this system. Which isn't at all bad when you think about it since the ISO200 file are so clean...

Also... there is good reason to beleive that ISO1600 is the maximum threshold prior to low level NR on the K-5.
Not really imperical, but definitely handy for the purists

I've put ALL Noise Reduction setting to ZERO in Light room 3.2.
just add COLOUR to 13.

It's very good. I'm impressed that IQ has no any traces of softness and "soapy" like 7D.

It's plastic toy at the photo, but IQ is really good. Film like.

I can't say that K-5 is noiseless camera, but noise is well-controlled and easy to remove just only with COLOUR NR in LR.
I used 6 for ISO800, 10 for ISO1600 and 13 for ISO3200.

It's rather scanty settings

Very nice!

By taking note of the fibers throughout the scene, we get a great way to judge the overall IQ of the images. In this case, I would rate them both very every good.

And lets not forget... these are early samples too.
I expect a slight gain in IQ as we become better acquainted with the system.

I know there is much more to learn about the new Pentax DSLRs BUT the early evidence is absolutely pointing to stellar image quality

I would ask - drop all qualifiers ("for an apsc", "for the money", etc) - and how closely to full frame IQ CAN this camera approach?

Frankly it is looking close - and I imagine that with good glass and a good photographer the gap will turn out to be very small

of course, the next generation of FF's are due out over the next 6 to 12 months
