Flash SYNC SWITCH not working on AF-540FGZ and AF-360FGZ

OK this is weird. I have one of each Pentax flash unit (a 540 I've had a while and a brand new 360 I had yesterday), and I can't get either of them into any other sync mode than Auto (leading curtain sync) - what on earth am I doing wrong, or are they BOTH faulty??

I've tried every other setting I can think of - am I missing something simple??? Is this a "wood for trees" problem? I only just decided to try contrast sync.... and can't!!

Anybody - HELP!! Surely they're not both suddenly faulty!?

I can't get anything other than leading curtain either off or on, camera (a K-7).

OK - I may have it sussed.... it seems to be all to do with having it on camera before you start, and half-pressing the shutter release in order to allow the camera to talk to the flash unit. Contrast sync evidently only works on a cable too, which is what I've been reading all over the place...!

Panic over I think!!
