Flash reflections

I was looking at the PDF manual of the Pentax 200S flash and saw this advice about reflections.

The thought that popped into my head when seeing this was: what if I masked the flash so that the rays of light with an angle of incident of 90 degrees were blocked? Has anyone tried this?

Thank you
Russell

The question is how you separate out the rays of light with an angle of incident of 90 degrees with the other rays of light.

For simplicity, the sketch shows different rays with different incident angles. But in practice, you can't really separate the rays.
