New METZ 58 AF-1 flash emits a burning smell when used - is this normal?

Brand new flash, received today. It smells like something is burning/melting when the flash is fired just a few times. Is this normal? I never encountered this situation with my Canon 580 EX II.

Both 54 and 58 do that for me after a handful of rapid shots. There's a reference in the manual to heat buildup.

Hate be a worry wart, but I NEVER had that happen with my Metz, ever.

I wouldn't dismiss it, especially if you paid retail for it new and you've got a warranty. Contact Metz support and explain what you've experienced and let THEM tell you it's normal, not us on this forum. Hopefully in a written email that you can keep for later use should you ever have to document something.

Hope it all works out, the Metz 58 is a wonderful flash.

My Mecablitz 60 CT-4 used to smell a bit after a few big pops.
