A bit. What camera body are you using, btw, and lens?
The popup flash will be less obnoxious if you turn the flash compensation *down* (Call it -1.0 to be a little safer) It'll tend to mean you're not getting the same range, but it's a little more pleasant and if you know what you're doing, you can get reasonably-nice fill out of the deal (I turn it down even more, but I know what I'm doing.
)
The problem with using a compensation setting for fire-and-forget is of course the 'forgetting' part.
It's an occasion that'll really call for an external flash if at all possible, though. If you can get to a shop, (Noticing you're in England: that improves your chances) then you may have to select from what's on hand, but there ought to be someone there who can help you choose and get a start on knowing what to do.

Actually, for cheap fire-and-forget I think a Metz 36 AF-4 could work OK for you. (They run about a hundred dollars, and there's nothing there to confuse you. Not immensely-powerful, (About the same power as that Pentax 360, the price difference is in the controls and features) but they'll seem to work for that fire-and-forget purpose.
The full-sized Sigma units (What's that model number, everyone, 530 ST?) are running fairly cheap last I looked on Amazon, (around 150 bucks?) Plenty of power, more control, and you ought to be able to use those in full auto and learn the finer points later.
If you order something, you'll want to put a real rush on the shipping, though: you don't have much time to get used to the things.
