Trigger voltage? - Lester A Dine Clinical Box Power Supply Model II (ring flash)

Hello all! I received from a dentist off eBay a ring flash with a plug-in power supply, the Lester A Dine Clinical Box Power Supply Model II. Below this on the name plate it says "120 Volts AC 50/60 Cyc. 200 W".

I was very excited to use this on my K20d, until I remembered about trigger voltage. It appears it can be connected to the camera via hot shoe or via the sync plug. I tried measuring the voltage with my analog voltmeter, with inconsistent results - either 12V, 90V or 210V depending on the scale of the voltmeter (15V, 150V, or 1000V). Reassuring, right?

Would it be crazy to try this on the K20d via the sync plug? there are references online to some protective circuitry there for high voltages, but still.... Anyone with any experience?

The power supply looks like this: Lester A Dine Clinical Power supply Model II ring light - eBay (item 280587298962 end time Feb-07-11 16:52:30 PST)

Thanks for any help!
Nick

Time to upgrade to a cheap digital multimeter? If you have an optical slave around then triggering the ring light with another strobe could be a workaround.

Thanks to Magkelly who found this, there's an inexpensive safe-sync adapter out there for us mere mortals.

Just 16 bucks, and Photodiox is a well known company. The Wein is over 50!

Thanks for the tip, Ira! I couldn't see dropping $50 more on this old junk, but $16 seems quite reasonable.

As for the multimeter, it reads fine on everything else, so I suspect there is something funky about the power supply. We'll see!

Lowell posted a more in depth discussion a while ago, but apparently manual meters don't like the ultra low current output across the flash trigger, which is why they give erratic readings.

Well the SMDV looks all right, but I can't get my K20d to fire the flash through it. Nor my ME, which will at least fire the flash without it. Hmmm, more investigation is needed.
