Whats the cheapest way to mount a flash on my tripod? Quick browse of adorama reveals a few options but theyre all around $20-$50.
Any ways to do it cheaper?

generic umbrella mount on ebay for 7-10 usd.
or if you use radio trigger, a radio receiver with hotshoe and screw hole on the base will do the same.

Duct tape, though I'd try masking tape which is cheaper and leaves less residue :-)

Something akin to this should work: Hot Shoe Flash Stand Adapter with 1/4"-20 Tripod screw - eBay (item 120643718417 end time Apr-05-11 01:59:30 PDT)

Seriously, I was disappointed when I first turned a Pentax AF540 mount upside down to reveal only plain black plastic. (It is double the price too)

Same here. My lowly Canon 420EX comes with a much better stand, with threaded hole for tripod mount. Even the stand for my 20 yr. old Minolta 5400 is better than the Pentax counterpart.

These look like the item that comes with the YN560, in addition to snugly sitting on top of a tripod thanks to that 1/4" female thread they are also great as such for having the flash to stand on a table/shelf/floor especially with the El-Cheapo (PT-04) radio triggers having hot shoe mounts themselves. Dirt cheap and easy to slip in the bag .

But be aware that if it's metal, you'll need to use tape to mask off the flash contacts. Annoying. I think the Nikon flash stand is a better option.

Matt,
I have 2 of these hot shoe metal flash stands, attaches to the tripod by a 1/4" theraded stud. Even though its metal, it doesn't short out the flash because its been designed to clear the contacts on the bottom of the flash shoe.

just thought people would want to know.

Check the Accessories section on this site, and you'll find things like this. Best bang for your buck in this situation, bar none.

I got a cheap one (from Adorama or B&H; I forget), and found that the clearance wasn't sufficient. Dumb design, I guess. I'm glad to hear they're not all that way, but still something to be cautious of.
