If you want to use it manual you can also buy the Nikon speedlights, the SB-24 would cost you well bellow 100USD and they are fantastically built.
Unfortunately, from what I've been able to determine, the SB-24 is no longer being produced, and can only be purchased in a used condition, for example on E-Bay. You might get one that lasts for many years, but if it blows the second time out, you're simply out of luck. The Vivitar, on the other hand, comes new with a 1-year warranty, and has been a work horse among photographers for many years. No bells and whistles to be sure, but with a trigger voltage of only about 5 volts the new ones, at least, can be safely used directly on your camera's hot shoe mount, and the flash can be set in various auto modes using its mechanical dial if you don't want to go full manual. I've just recently purchased one of these, and have been very satisfied with its performance. The only downside which comes to mind is the lack of high speed sync, but if you're going to be using it off-camera in a studio setting, for example, then this is not a problem. Merely food for thought. Good luck with whatever you decide upon.

Absolutely true. I was thinking seriously in taking the Viv instead of the speedlights sb-24/28 that I have but finally i chose the nikons cos they can swivel and that helps me in some situations. But I agree, the vivitars are made to last and the warranty is something important to consider. BTW some people claim that the Wein peanuts are not very reliable, how is it your experience with them?
