Is a manual flash required

if using manual lenses? I have a couple M lenses, and I really want to get more comfortable with portraits, but want to get a flash too (and not break bank ~$100 preferably). But, using the camera in M mode so I can use the 50 and the 28 - what kind of flash would go best considering that?

Thanks

One with Auto mode, and preferably, also with ratio settings in manual mode.
