Advice from strobists please

My camera club had a photo shoot at some old churches in Niagara On The Lake, Canada, saturday. I tried to light up this pulpit with 2 flashes, one pointed at the back and one the ceiling, but you can see the light spill on the walls. I'd appreciate any advise on how to eliminate this, I tried to turn the exposure level down, but then the back was too dark. The easy fix was to blend a non flash photo of the background, but is that cheating????????

Thanks

Next time try using a snoot on your flash. For an even tighter light pattern try a grid. Both snoots and grids are easy DIY projects to make. DIY - Homemade Speedlite "Snoot" | DIYPhotography.net

and here is a page that explains them.

Thanks Cacain, that certainly looks like a good project for a winters evening!

Can you post a picture of your attempt? Snoots are one way, I normally use a grid and a flag, or barn doors if you have them. Also make sure if your flash has a zoom head that it's zoomed to the longest tele setting.

Why would it be cheating, since when are there any rules when it comes to photography?

Hi maxfield, here are some of the attempts I made, the titles are explanatory.

Thanks

P.S. I don't know why the first is blurry, it wasn't when it left here! but you get the picture

Cheating

Hi Anvh

Cheating in photography is a subjective thing, some want everything in camera others don't care, personally I'm somewhere in the middle.

That, or a softbox.

Ok, I see. Yeah barn doors are what I'd use, but I think zooming your flash head would go a long way too. You can make a cheapo barn door set with a few pieces of cardboard and a rubber band, or if you look around you can probably find a set that's designed to go on a speedlight. Here's a set for a monolight, but it's the right diameter to fit on a hotshoe flash.

I'd say there's absolutely nothing wrong with blending the exposures in post. That's how all modern architectural photos are made these days.

Barn door

I don't see a manufacturers name to check availability in Canada, a search for "No Mod Barn Door' came up blank.

The particular company in the article is SP Studio Systems, they're made in China so you probably won't find them in your local camera store. I actually have a set that came with my monolights, but it's a little too big to fit on my Metz 58, though they fit my Metz 45 ok. B&H has them, but you may want to write to them and ask if the barn doors will fit on your particular model of flash gun.

Not just architecture. Pretty much anything that requires complex lighting. Check this out.
