Wien Peanut Slaves --- AAAHHHHH

OK I have 7 peanut slaves from Wein. All have been wroking well for about 3-6 weeks. I finally last week got my studio set up and configured with 8 flashes firing optically. Last night I went down to prepare for a shoot (TODAY) and 4 of my peanuts will not fire the flash unless I hold another flash 10 inches away firing right at it.. and even that is intermitant. I am running AC adapters to all these Vivitars (283/285). I have tried to replace the Batts with fresh ones just in case the peanut operates on that juice. I am very frustraited. I am down to 5 working flases out of 10. To light my backdrop evenly I need to have 4 on the backdrop 2-3 in my softbox. I also have 1 PC extension cable and if I put that on a flash unit they will fire just fine. Any clues on these peanuts? or are they just Junk?
