There's also a 360 as a rim light, probably low and behind the flower?
Oh damn, just realized I have been looking at a different pic, making me sound even more deluded than I usually do. Yep, the 540 is low left, pointing at the leaves, 360 side right, ringflash fill. Of course the caption tells us most of that.

Thanks to all the input from everyone - I just ordered the ring flash.

And I couldn't help myself at that point and ordered an AF540 flash to go along with it.

Now I am broke once again, but looking forward to all the fun I will have with these.

We are delighted to have contributed to your FBA (???) and your recent insolvency. If you would like to discuss lenses at a later date, A*200 macro, APO Lanthar 125 or some such, we would be only to pleased to contribute to your move to complete bankruptcy through LBA :-)

You are pretty close, but this is how I actually did it : the AF540 was fitted with a sto-fen diffuser and set to 1/8 power and elevated a foot above the rose using a flash stand and positioned one foot behind and to the right of the rose bloom*, the AF360 was to the lower left and placed on the ground and set to 1/2th power, so there is a near 4 stop range between the two flash units, and I used the ring-flash at 1/4th power to reduce the overall contrast in the scene - so I could locally adjust the contrast in Lightroom to taste.

*the shadow on the leaf in the lower right portion of the frame is a dead give away. And if you look at the stem you get a hint of the power ratio I used between the two flash units.

If you read it aright! I puzzled over that shadow but got it exactly wrong. Think I was confused by some of the shadows on the blossom. Thanks for the info, very instructive.

no problems, learning how to de-construct a flash photograph is an incredibly useful skill, and it is certainly a skill worth learning. I have always had a knack for doing it, for me the most important thing is paying attention to the shadows and the highlights. Because the shadows tell you more than just about where the light is in the scene, but what light shaping tools were used. The Highlights are more of a directional cue, they indicate the position of the light and they also can help indicate if diffusing light modifiers were used.
