Yuongnuo 560 and trailing curtain sync

Hello all

I was wondering if any of yuongnuo 560 users have tried trailing sync with a pentax K7? And if it works?

Thanks

I have an YN-560 II. If that model is of any interest to you I can try to test it out.

I was first going to answer with a "I don't see why not," so I tried it on my K200d - didn't work - the camera doesn't have it as an option, so the flash needs to have it (or TTL), and the YN560 doesn't. In my reading, however, it sounds like the k-7 can be set to trailing curtain via menu.

IN other words, it won't with the k200d, it might (I'm guessing probably) with the K-7. I think a quick forum search might reveal the answer "k-7 trailing curtain" or similar.

I believe trailing curtain sync is a dedicated feature so it won't be available on any non-pentax flash (unless the flash speaks pentax!).

My 460-II manual states that "Your camera must support the rear curtain synchronization function of non-TTL flash". I can't help further though, because I have a K-x and I have to consult my own manual too.

Semi-relevant thread: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/general-technical-troubleshooting/168285-...tain-sync.html

Manual YNs (560, 460) does not interact with Pentax cameras. Therefore, if they are mounted on the camera, 2nd curtain sync option would not be available.
But. YN-560 could be placed off-camera & be triggered with in-camera strobe. Thus, if your in-cam strobe could be trailing synced, it may successfully lite off-camera YN-560.
As I have only manual lens, my in-cam strobe cannot be set to the trailing sync mode, so I cannot test this assumption with K-7, sorry. Though, on my Oly E-510 it works with some limitations described below.

You have to keep in mind, that in-cam flash would fire TTL pre-flash with 1st curtain. Thus, YN-560 in S1 mode will fire twice. In S2 mode you'll find yourself restricted to ~ 1/13 sec. of exposure or less.

1/10 sec., YN-560 in S2 mode didn't fire: http://desu.org.ua/pf/2012/_6053431.JPG
1/13 sec., it fired: http://desu.org.ua/pf/2012/_6053432.JPG

Maybe external optical slave sensors could help a little more with long exposures.

Thanks all for the replies.

Tsukiouji yes I was interested in the YN-560II and thanks for the info.

Guess there are some things that you can't do with a cheaper flash... oh well

If you're looking for a cheapish flash that does work with trailing sync on the K-7, the Cactus AF-50 for Pentax works. I believe I paid under $150 for mine. I've been pretty happy with it so far.
