Help with metz 54 mz-4 flsh

Got a chance to play around with the new to me flash today. It seems to work very well on all 3 of my Pentax's. K01, K10D using autoflash both direct and bounced and my old DS using auto and ttl. The funny thing is on the old ds the flash fires quite a bit before the shutter opens and shuts in both auto and ttl but exposure seems good both in auto and ttl. I'm just curious why the flash fires much quicker on the ds than the K01 or K10D. Something else I do not understand is when using the flash with the old ds I get a preflash in ttl and an even brighter preflash in autoflash. I'm using the 3702 m module.
