camera metering with an auto/ttl flash

I know how to balance the use of a flash off camera in manual mode. I'm trying to figure out how to meter my camera when using the flash on board in auto/ttl mode. Any suggestions? I've been reading planet neil.....Any other sources?

How about meter the scene in M mode first then pop up the flash and let it do the rest?

It depends on what you want to do.

For full flash exposure, assuming you have apature and ISO set on the flash, just take the shot as long as you are within range of the flawsh.

If you want to use flash to only cut shadows, then meter for about 1/2 - 1 stop under expose, and then let the flash do its job as others advise.

If you meter for the full scene, then the flash will cause over exposure
