Whatever happened to the potato masher?

I still use my AF 400T, especially with film bodies. It is built like a tank, has lots of power options, runs off 6, rather than 4 batteries which last longer, and on and on. I would use it more if my Pentax digital bodies would work with TTL. Big diffusers can cover up the sensor, but the sturdy construction of this baby will hold a softbox with ease.

If you shoot weddings or similar events, you end up putting together a bracket, cords, ball joints etc. to turn an AF540 or clone into a potato masher. However, Pentax does not make these workhorses with all the features of a modern dedicated flash.

I suppose one could order one of the expensive Metz units which seem to get mixed reactions, but I'm not sure the SCA adapters give full functionality.

Those work pretty well, but the light output leaves something to be desired.

Still using them. I currently have: Metz 60CT-4, 60CT-1, 45CT-4 (X2), 45CT-1, 45CL-4(X2), .Sunpak 555, 522, Quantum QFlash T2 (big and heavier than most potato masher).

But I currently use Sunpak 120J (I have 2 copies) with a Lumedyne MicroCycler or a Quantum Turbo Compact.

See my signature.

The QFlash looks like a great option for Canon or Nikon. How is it used with Pentax?

Still using a Nissin Auto 5200G - tested the voltage first and it is well within tolerance - great for illuminating large spaces..

Me too. Original owner as well - over 20 years old and it still works a treat.

I have two Metz 60 CT-4 systems for times when I need serious flash power. They work better than I would have expected with the K-01, with the only serious downside being the relatively heavy battery packs.

These things are really built, too. I had one on a light stand fall down a set of bleacher stairs. It shrugged it off.

What happened is higher iso in cameras...they just aren't needed as much...and the fresnels make the new flashes almost as bright as the old mashers (measured w/ a light meter)...

Certainly, a modern DSLR at ISO 200 or even 400 is better than some films of 30 years ago at that ISO, but a well lit scene with indirect light still takes power, especially in a large hall.

The other point to me is that we keep paying three figure amounts for a bracket on which we place a shoe-mounted flash. The need for this configuration is there, so why not make the resulting contraption stronger and increase the battery capacity?

And the light output is higher than the kitchen model!
