If budget is a consideration:
Interfit STR111 Strobies On-Camera Small Diffuser STR111 B&H

(Couldn't find an Australian source for this).

Sample results:

Maybe not as good as a full ring flash setup, but not bad compared to flash and softbox on a macro arm. And really good for a few quid.

Thanks Top-quark , I ended up ordering the Mecablitz Unit . I'm still not sure if I can Justify the purchase for the Metz unit as I don't do Macro photography that often , I really like hangman's lighting set up and seems to work adequately and brilliant clarity and sharpness. and it is relatively affordable. I'll see how I go with the ring flash.

No problem Nemet.that's what joining a forum is all about. :-)

Well , the ring48 ring light arrived today. i must have looked at the ebay ad wrongly. It's not a flash at all. Just a ring light with 48 Led's and 6 different ring adaptor sizes. the power pack just sits in the the hotshoe to supply power to the ring light?? But one cannot control anything other than turning on/off the lhs and rhs bank of lights.

Now are you considering the $7.95 pop-up flash diffuser?
