It looks like Metz just have uploaded a new firmware version 4.1 for the 58-AF2 Pentax: Metz
and version 5.1 for the 58-AF1 Pentax: Metz

And I do confirm this fixed the problem (K-5 latest fw + Metz 58-AF2 fw 4.1 + DA40 2.8 Limited)

Version v. 5.1 has SOLVED THE PROBLEM for me too! It performs flawlessly for both new and legacy lenses in both A, M, PTTL and PTTL-HSS flash modes.
I urge anyone who has v. 5.0 installed on Metz 58 AF-1 or v. 4.0 on Metz 58 AF-2 to consider updating to the newest firmware for Metz 58 AF-1 and Metz 58 AF-2.

Hi!
What are the benefits of the new v.4.0/v.4.1 firmware of the 58 AF-2 for the K-5 IIs users? My flash has a v.3.0 firmware, P-TTL HSS works fine. I only find (in camera's M mode) that the maximum 'real' shutter speed is only 1/160, not 1/180. After 1/160 there goes 1/200 rightaway. I use 1/3 EV steps. If I switch to the oedinary P-TTL mode (not HSS), then I it is possible to select 1/180. Does anyone know why it is so?

That's something I'd like to know as well.
Metz told me the HSS function has been improves but not how so.

The sync-speed of 1/180 just isn't part of the series of shutter speeds if you select 1/3 EV steps. It is a 1/3 step between 1/160 and 1/200. To get 1/180, you have to switch to 1/2 EV steps.

It's a bit confusing to me. How can I switch to 1/180 from 1/160 if one turn of the wheel selects 1/200, not 1/180 (in P-TTLL HSS). If my flash is in ordinary P-TTL mode, I can easily select 1/180.

What Class A was suggesting (as I understand) is to get to 1/180 you have to use the mode dial and use the "X" mode where the shutter speed is always 1/180
When you are in PTTL or any other mode (except for PTTL HSS) the top shutter speed is limited by 1/180, so in any mode on the camera after 1/160, 1/180 will appear (rather than 1/200). (Well to be precise when the meeter is not active the LCD screen may show 1/200 however as soon as you activate the meeter it goes back to 1/180)

In PTTL HSS mode however you can select any shutter speed you want in M, Tv or TAv modes, thus the normal sequence is valid (i.e 1/160 then 1/200 ...) thus to get 1/180 in PTTL HSS mode you need to switch to the "X" mode on the camera, you can also get 1/180 if you go to any mode where the shutter speed is selected automatically by the camera.

What I meant to write is that "To get 1/180 as a choice, you have to switch to 1/2 EV steps."

This kind of an answer I was looking for!
However, it's still a pity, that it's impossible to select 1/180 in P-TTL HSS mode with 1/3 EV steps. I know the difference between 1/2 EV and 1/3 EV is almost insignificant but anyway.

I've searched for an answer to this with no luck. I'm having trouble updating my 58AF-2. I'm on a newish mac and if I plug in the usb, the flash won't power up. If I have the power already on and plug it in, the power goes out. Any way I try it, the computer never recognizes that the flash is plugged in. It's probably something simple that will make me feel silly, but what's the deal?

I always removed the batteries before connecting the flash via USB. The USB port from my Windows laptop provides sufficient power to run the flash.

If that doesn't work for you, you may want to try a different computer.

I tried it without the batteries first, the usb won't power it. Only other computer I have is a mac mini. If my big mac (ha!) won't power it, no way that one will. I wonder if maybe I try disconnecting all other usb cables, the power will be concentrated enough for that one to give it enough juice. There are no other devices connected though, just empty-ended cables, so I don't know. Thanks anyway.
