K-30 With YN-560III Flash

Hi,

I just got my YN-560 III from amazon. I got this to learn flash photography as it was only a $70 investment.

I also got the RF-603N wireless trigger which seems to work really well. The only problem with this was that the hotshoe seemed to be bigger than it needed to be so it did not go in my K-30. I filed one corner and now it goes in OK.

My question is now about HSS and flash sync in K-30. From what I understand, the YN-560 is NOT a TTL flash, so you have to do everything manually (Im OK with that part as I actually want to learn) however,

1- My K-30 jumps from 1/160s to 1/200 (There is no clear way for me to choose 1/180
2- Any way of using HSS with this flash ?(from what I understand this will allow faster than 1/180)
3. What is the maximum speed of HSS?
4. I have noticed that any speed after 1/160 (next shutter stop is 1/200) this flash would not trigger. any way to make this flash trigger faster than 1/160?

Thanks,

1 - your camera is set to go in third-stops rather than half-stop adjustments. You'll have to change that setting from within the camera options if you want to get 1/180s
2 - No, dumb flashes like Yonguos do not support HSS.
3 - As fast as your camera can shoot, given that you have an HSS compatible flash, which you don't
4 - The max sync speed on your camera is 1/180. You cannot properly expose for flash any faster than that due to the mechanics of the focal plane shutter.

What's the deal with the stroboscopic mode of the Yongnuo, then?

It is for a multi-exposure effect with a slow shutter speed.

The AF 360FGZ supports HSS and it "only" costs $250. Not sure if you were being serious about the $500 limit, but the normal price on the AF 540FGZ is still only $400, still within your budget. There are plenty of third-party options under $500 which support P-TTL, just make sure the specs say it actually supports HSS.

Just a brief mention, that depending on what you want to do, you could also pick up another non-DSLR camera that supports higher native sync speeds, such as the Q10, which can do 1/2000 and is currently going for $324 with a compatible (leaf-shutter) lens. That would work directly with your YN-560 III just fine at the higher speeds, even without HSS protocol support.

By the way, as I said i have the RF-603N wireless trigger. the K-30 has a wireless flash option built in. Is there a way to trigger the YN-560III using the wireless trigger from the K-30? That way I dont really need my RF-603!!!!

Thanks!

The wireless flash system of the K-30 is for P-TTL capable flashes only and it is optical, not radio. You could set the Yongnuo to S2 mode and leave the K-30's onboard flash in normal mode and it will trigger, however the onboard flash will be contributing to the exposure, which may not be wanted.

after reading your post I got curious about newest rumors and found this:

CONFIRMED – YN-560 III – Remote Power Control – with NEW Transmitter Coming! | FLASH HAVOC

I am so liking these YN560 III's anyway with the YN603's they have been super. But the new Tx module really gives me wood. I do miss a modern flash system with my Pentax gear, I shot Canon for a few years. But seems 3rd party solutions are maturing quite nicely enough so we can have decent remote manual control of the individual flashes in the fairly new future. That will be a blast...

I've been adding YN560's one at a whack for the past few months because they are a good deal with the built-in RF Rx unit so I can manage with just a few of the 603's for my other flashes. Seems the new Tx will give me a nice dividend by year end? Even if we don't get HSS I'll still be doing a happy dance.

They finally listened and decided to make a remote power control for their manual flashes.

This will be a given!! Been wanting more flash but i've been holding back as it's not really that fun to walk back and forth to manually adjust power if you are having 3-4 flashes.. LoL!

Yippee!

The Sigma EF-610DG SUPER pretty much 'does it all' for around $250 and puts out a lot of light. However, fair warning, the Pentax AF 540FGZ's controls are more intuitive. Whenever I want to do something with my Sigma that I have repeatedly practiced, I find myself pulling up both the flash and camera manual on my tablet.

I'd recommend the Metz 58 AF-2 (third party, but this one is the flagship model) for your HSS needs. Got mine for around $390. Has more features than what I actually use.
