You should read that Strobist site a bit more before buying...it also includes an article on background stands

Basically, the original Strobist philosophy was inexpensive manual flashes (they just need the middle pin, so anything that works on that will work on any camera you want except for some Sony bodies where Minolta changed the standard pin positions)...no TTL or HSS. Strobist guy (David Hobby) has since graduated to studio strobes.
