Hello,
I have aquired a Metz 54 MZ-3. Or rather I am able to, for somewhere in the region free-very cheap.
Now I wonder what functionality I can use with the SCA3702 adapter for Pentax. It has become clear to me that the new model of the SCA3702 will not work with the flash. What about the the older version? Can I use the flash fully with P-TTL and all that? Or will I be limited with it? Should I instead buy a Metz 54 MZ-4 and a new adapter? Or another flash all together?.
No, you can't use anything like P-TTL with the MZ3 version. But you can use the thyristor automatic and it will switch the camera to its falsh snc time (if you want to). The A uto-thyristor mode of the Metz deleivers usually very good results (and you can even use exposure compensation, just set it in the flash menue and not in the camera). The MZ3 supports the older TTL-protocoll of the Penntax film cameras and the istD and istDS. All other Pentax DSLRs do not support this older mode.
If you want to use P-TTL, you need the 54 MZ4i - it works with the new adapter. But generally I must say (I have both of these flash guns and quite a couple more...) that the Metz A exposure is quite as good as P-TTL - both have thier limitations, though.
