Question - RF 603 N3 & YN 560 III

I have the two items above headed my way. I mainly purchased the RF unit because it was just as good a deal as any sync cord I could find and reviews look positive. Reading and trying to understand all the functions, I'm wondering if I'll be able to use the 2nd transmitter in hand, as a shutter release, and that will in turn trigger the flash off camera since the YN560 III has wireless function built in? Thanks in advance for your answers. This forum has really helped my learning curve.

If itīs version II of the RF603 it will. Else, it needs to be on a hotshoe to be used as trigger.. Really weird.

Well, it's version III as far as I can tell. Did they regress?

Hmm I donīt think thereīs a version III. The name is RF-603 N3 II. It costs the same as version I. Look for online pictures.

Assumed it was the 3rd installment since there is a RF 603 N1, RF 603 N2, and a RF 603 N3 as outlined on this page.

The N1, N2, and N3 indicate which Nikon shutter release cable comes with the set. Unfortunately, the C1 Canon cable is the one you need for Pentax bodies that have a wired port (NOT K-x, K-r, or K-01), but the Canon transceivers won't work on Pentax bodies. So you need Nikon transceivers and a Canon cable.

I've got several RF-603s and RF-603 IIs. Even with the first version, you can use the unit handheld as a shutter release fob. I thought the same as carrrlangas, that it had to be on-body to be in transmit mode, but I found that off-body, it will go into transmit mode when you hold the test button.

So wouldn't the 603 II C1 have the right cable and the right hotshoe pin?

Yes and no. Except for the center pin, the hotshoe pins are still wrong, but it doesn't matter because there's a switch to ignore the other pins and force the transceiver into TX mode.

The three models that work with Pentax bodies:
RF-603 N (N1, N2, N3, etc.)
RF-603 II N
RF-603 II C

(EDIT: I previously said that the 603 II for Canon had to be in TX mode, but have since found that both 603 II N and 603 II C work in either TX or TRX.)

The one model that never works with Pentax:
RF-603 C

Ok, so does it even matter which one I get? I will be able to remotely release both shutter and flash simultaneously with any of them? (besides 603 C 1st generation)

The K-30 has a wired port, so with a C1 cable, anything except the 603 C 1st generation will fire the shutter and trigger the flash at the same time.

If you already have 603Ns on the way, a C1 cable can be had for about five bucks.

My experience with K-5 and K-5IIs is that the RF-603 N3 wonīt work as a transmitter or wireless release on itīs own. also, it wonīt work when mounted on my Sigma DP2M so you need the right pins to make contact. The version II suppors "center pin only" so any hotshoe can trigger it. Version I does supoprt awakening (when the camera meter starts working it wakes up the trigger and YN-560III flashes). In did the cable release included doesnīt work for Pentax but if you buy a canon transmitter for the cable then you could loose the awakening feature.
