Metz 58 wireless not working? Metz 48 works great? Ideas?

OK, so after having trouble keeping my AF540FGZ on my camera's hot shoe I sent it in for repair and bought a Metz 58.

I LOVE the Metz 58. That said, I can't get the wireless to work more than sporadically. We (my business partner and I) have a Metz 48 that works GREAT in wireless mode--better than the Pentax 540 ever did.

Is there a trick to getting the 58 to work wirelessly? I set the flash in Slave mode and the camera to Wireless flash, and like I said, it works great with the Metz 48 so I'm 99.9% positive I'm doing everything right.

Maybe the 58 doesn't work well in slave mode?

Ideas?

I have no answer to your question (sorry), but I'm curious about this statement. Can you elaborate on how it works better than the Pentax unit in wireless mode?

Well, I guess the 540 always worked alright in wireless--I guess I'm just impressed that the 48 (made by a different manufacturer) works flawlessly--haven't been able to trick it at all.

I could sometimes trick the 540 by pointing the control flash in the opposite direction or in a large room or in really bright sunlight. That said, the 540 wireless did work OK.

Same here, Metz 58 isn't that reliable in IR wireless, my Metz 15ms1 works almost every time with the popup on K200D.

Edit: Okay, a bit old thread, crawled from the similar threads suggestions

My 58 works well if the front faces the trigger flash.
The 58 has (as far as I know) only a sensor in front.
Luckily you can turn the reflector to the subject.

Check the 58 is on the same channel and not been changed inadvertently.
