Pentax AF080C Battery Number - 4 or 6?

I bought a secondhand AF080C and the handbook specs says it has 6 batteries, this website in the accessories section show it having 6 batteries.

But the handbook also says to load 4 batteries, not 6, and I can only find space for 4. Is there a hidden compartment for the other two? I ask because the power supply whistles for a short time but the ready light doesn't come on - is it due to low voltage or a more serious problem?

Actually, while I'm asking - does anyone know the type name of the external power lead so I can try to get one?

This may help with the power pack question.

The AF080C ring flash manual seems inconsistent on this. All images of the pack I've ever seen only show space for four.

Whatever the number I understand the batteries must all face the same way. They don't alternate.

I've just pulled my AF-080C out of the cupboard and can confirm that it only uses four (4) AA batteries. And as johnhilvert says they all face the same way. No alternation.

Regards

Chris

Four AA's in my version as well.

Detailed information on the AC adapter here as well. PENTAX AC Adapter II reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database.

Thanks all, I didn't think I was stupid - well, not that stupid.

Re no alternation, yes, I had seen that.

It looks like it has an electronic fault so I'll have to pull it apart and try to find out what's wrong. A schematic diagram would be nice (I used to be an electronics tech).

Looking at the external supplies, it must put 510 volts (or thereabouts) onto those two exposed pins. That's a surprise.

I just noticed the AC Adapter II puts out 170 Volts DC (PENTAX AC Adapter II reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database) on the plug to the flash.
