Actually I'm designing one also because there aren't ring flashes I want

First I want to have white white and yellow white LEDs. So that I get somehow continuous spectre. Or I need to find high CRI LED which is really hard knowing how those things are built.

And then... I want also RGB to throw the balance (and AE from camera) way off. And total control.

I'd suggest learning about how to drive one of the LED's well first, then scaling up to an array. Try to keep it simple, controlling LED output by adjusting voltage is pretty inefficient/not a great design in my opinion, I'd recommend going for full on, or being able to switch off half or a subset and someone recommended. A pulse width modulating (PWM) control is a really good way to modulate LEDs. An arduino is a really easy way to do PWM, but too bulky to attach to a camera.

Have you seen these LED wizards?

LED series parallel array wizard
LED calculator for single LEDs

Post up your final solution! I have a bunch of IR LEDs, maybe I'll make an IR ring light... :-)

what makes you think that?
