External battery pack for AF540FGZ / AF 500FTZ flashes

Hi all I am thinking of making a external battery pack for the above flashes . I was wondering for any 1 that has a Pentax TRII , TRIII or even the JJC FB4 power pack what is the polarity of the pins for the plug? ie which pin in the + & which 1 is the -?. Also I presume the JJC has 8 batteries But I presume the voltage is still only 6 volt out put?
Thanks

Be carefull there is nothing about 6 Volt. It is more than 300V. In the Top of the external power supply unit is an voltage converter which delivers high voltage directly to the Capacitor of the flash. That is the reason that even with the power pacxk, you have to have Batteries in the flash, they are needed to power the electronic components.

Never remove the cable of the external unit when either flash or unit is powered.

There are two kinds of external power pack: high voltage (330V) and low voltage (6V). The main purpose of high voltage pack is to shorten the recycle time. It also lengthens the time between battery charge or battery replacement. The main purpose of low voltage pack is to lengthen the time between battery charge or battery replacement.

The current version of Pentax 540 does NOT accept external high voltage. The original 540 version and the 500 do.

A 330V shock from a high voltage pack can be nasty, but it should not happen if you know what you're doing.

Please tell me what you'd like to do. I used to mess around with high voltage packs a bit. I may be able to help.

This was one of my threads about the Pentax TR.

@SOldBear Your thread is very interesting, have you any link to the low Voltage pack for AF 540 generation I.
I've a small problem with mine, the uppermost of the three holdings of the battery compartment lid is broken, an sometimes the contact is missing.
With an external low voltage pack I probably could fix this.
Exchange of the lid seems not to be easy.

If not needing for a special case like this, woudln't it be the easiest to just to get the Godox PB960 and the JJC QTS-4 cable? Welcome to modern ages.

ps. I've got excess TR packs if anybody needs.

For Australians, Pentax Australia still have the TR power pack for the AF540FGZ at A$130.

https://pentax.com.au/products/37225

If you'd bought yesterday, you'd have received the Friday discount as well.

I bought one a short while back.

With the QTS-4 cable, the various Quantum Turbo battery models will power the 500 and 540 type I via their auxiliary power port. Also, with a Quantum CZ2 or CZ cable, Quantum Turbo type batteries (really power supplies) will power Cactus RF60X (and perhaps RF60).

The original Quantum battery units with the phono jack outputs feed 6V to quad battery shaped modules that fit into a flash's battery housing. I haven't kept up with how those have evolved since the '80s.

I currently use two of the JJC BF-4 on my 540fgz's and recently picked up another 540 fgz. Due to lack of being able to find a TR or JJC I have picked up a Quantum Turbo Compact & JJC QTS-4 cable to use on it.
