Pentax HSS/Powersync/hypersync Off Camer Flash Tutorial

I have made a quick tutorial video on how to trick pentax into Powersync (closest I can get to HSS with the flash I have) I don't really do tute videos so this is very rough. I hope this helps people to do what I have hoped I would one day be able to do with pentax for portraits.
All of this applies to the K3 as well.

Could you put a Yongnuo TX on top of this Cactus device? Thus allowing "Power Sync" with a series of manual 560 IV's. I'm not sure I've ever heard of Power Sync honestly.

Oh my appologies, you mentioned the need for HSS flashes.

I did enjoy your tutorial though. Its relaxing. I often find the typical modern videos too flashy... Just like modern television, perspective changes over 3-5 seconds. This does not enhance that quality at all. Well done.

PowerSync is Cactus's term for HyperSync (a PocketWizard term).

It simply means that there is support for adjusting the flash timing so that you can use a regular flash pulse to light the whole frame (albeit with some level of gradation).

This only works for full power flashes, though, because at lower power levels, flash durations become too small.

PowerSync does not need HSS-capable flashes as long as one is happy with the "full power" constraint.

So, yes you should be able to put a Yongnuo TX on top of a V6II and thus trigger multiple manual 560 IVs.

yeah it will trick the camera to send the pulse, just depends if the flash can have a flash duration long enough which is what setting the ad360 to hss will activate

Can't you put another Cactus V6II directly on the AD360 and get real HSS?

He is getting real HSS already with his approach as he activates the HSS mode on the flash manually.

The advantage of using a V6II receiver at the flash would be remote power and zoom control. However, only a flash like the Godox AD360IIC supports the necessary system-specific hot shoe. The regular AD 360 only supports simply triggering via the hot shoe and relies on its proprietary trigger system for further control.

So, didn't he say he's only getting Powersync?

The acon R930 with firmware 516 do this more easily and more comfortable.

You're confusing me, SBP - does that Godox have *HSS* or not?

No, it won't.

The flash in question (AD 360) is a purely manual flash only. There is no P-TTL support and a trigger stacking solution with an Acon won't be any easier or more comfortable.

At least with a V6(II) one gets one dedicated on/off button for up to four groups.

Ohhhhhh,

I think you would have not read the acon R930 manual. it des make the application exactly like this. and something more advanced.

There are multiple ways in which one can interpret "HSS":
  1. a flash emits a long burst (rather than a short pulse).
  2. the camera provides a pre-sync signal to the flash in order to avoid a delayed flash and hence a black bar in the frame.
  3. both of the above.
  4. the P-TTL variant of HSS (using optical triggering, a pre-flash and 3.)
The Godox AD 360 supports 1.

The Cactus V6II makes the camera provide 2.

If one put an AD 360 on a V6II receiver then I'm pretty sure even the HSS sync-mode on the V6II would be supported. But the fact that the OP can't use HSS sync-mode does not seem to matter; PowerSync seems to be working just fine. Given that the V6II does not control the power level of the AD360, the fact that the V6II requests full power when the shutter speed is over the sync speed does not hurt.

@sbroadbentphoto
Have you tried selecting "Nikon" as the flash system on your on-camera V6II? That appears to help when using a trigger stack approach.

I've read it and am not sure whether the English in the manual or the cryptic LED feedback from the trigger is more unintelligible.

I also know that the current version of the Acon trigger requires one to use elaborate long/short button press maneuvers because it lacks the hardware controls (lack of display included) to support intuitive and comfortable usage.

What do you mean by "something more advanced"?

That's *not* HSS.

HSS is a method invented by Olympus with the OM-4Ti, using many short pulses.
