Wouldn't one on the KS-2 with a second as a PTTL slave off camera work? I can't find my 585 manual right this second.

It would need to have “Wireless Master/Control” capability for that ....I can’t remember if it does (I suspect not), but there has been discussion on this aspect here on the forum previously though. Hopefully an owner of the model can clarify for us.

It’s not possible as the flash has no “Wireless Master/Control” mode.

Off camera PTTL flash is explained on page 14 of the user manual where it states:
«SP trigger mode supports receiving wireless signal from AF-360FGZ, AF540FGZ II and built-in flash or other master units of Pentax; it also supports 4 channel, off-camera TTL and manual flash.»

Best regards,

Thanks ddharriman, for clarifying that and it's helpful to see the exact reference from the manual. There was a quote recently from another member showing the word "radio" which adds to the confusion, but I interpret it as a mistranslation in this wireless context.

I don't think the Y585EX could reasonably be described as able to "work with the K-S2 off-camera", without some qualification. I think it is really only suited to on-camera working with the K-S2. For off-camera work you would be better off with a radio system where the receiver is built in to the flash. Perhaps the Yongnuo 560IV for manual mode, or Cactus V6II / RF60x for manual plus P-TTL and HSS.
Played around with every conceivable setting on both the flash and KS-2. I was unsuccessful firing the flash off camera. Maybe I just don't know what I'm doing or it simply doesn't work as an off camera flash in slave mode. Unless of course I use a radio system with a transceiver set. But, if somebody knows how to make it work off camera please guide me. Thanks

To use the 585 off-camera in P-TTL mode, you need a master/controller on camera like the 540 or 360 as was mentioned earlier. You can use the 585 off-camera in manual mode by triggering it with the built-in flash. This requires you to set the 585 in S1 or S2 mode as appropriate. You access these two slave modes by a long press of the "Mode" button on the 585 and then using its four-way controller to step through through the various options. See page 10 of the 585 manual.

Thanks. I was able to find the instructions on page 10 and 14 of the manual. it can be fired off camera on S1 with your on camera flash operational. Works as a slave. Thanks everybody for helping me through this.
