colour coded socket

I have 2 old Pentax flashes:
AF200T and AF280T they both have round socket in the front with a green surround.
I just discovered that AF200S has a similar socket but with a red surround.
Is there any significant functionality differences between those two colours?
What are they for, 2.5mm jack is way too big?

They should be the sensor in the flash when it is working in Auto mode and the flash is controlling the flash output and not the camera.

Regards
