I used a lightweight stand that reaches close to the ceiling., Metz unit on top of the stand. The ceiling must be white, walls preferably too.
Trigger the Metz with a low output setting of the built in flash or use a radio controlled trigger. Bounced light is not only softer, it bothers subjects like family less.
That gives you flexibility without carrying the weight of the Metz unit with you.
I've seen this technique used at weddings to help illuminate a room in a relatively unobtrusive way. Great suggestion!

Does the AF360FGZII have the auto thyristor mode? I thought only 540 had that mode?

Thanks for all suggestions, will read more thoroughly and ponder a bit

No, though the AF360FGZ (no II) and AF540FGZ (no II) both do. The version II models both dropped the feature.

I read in old posts there are some problems with bounce exposure with recent Metz flashes. Has this been fixed in firmware for 52/64?

My Metz 58 AF-2 and my wife's K-x never did work well when I tried bounce exposures with them. With my K-5, the pairing worked much better.

Did not experience any trouble bouncing my Metz 54 AF.
Replaced the Metz though for a Elinchrome 600 Ws mono block.
Output set at 3/4, gives me nice isolated items at F20.

What a disappointment Tears in my eyes, always thought I was the only genius who thought of that.

I use the same technique in the little room I call my studio.
Soft light without the need to use softboxes for which there is no room anyway.

Once you get used to a fixed flash set up you can concentrate on the images without being bothered with lighting.
I use a cheap Chinese made radio trigger, sheer pleasure to shoot items I am selling.
