flash hot shoe not on camera?

I bet this sounds like a wierd one, but i'm wondering, is there a way to fire my AF-540 flash sitting off camera, without the on camera flash going off. I have the K200D, (love it by the way) and was curious about this. I'll be taking some pretty sexy shots of the wifey tonight so this could come in handy!!! thanks for your help. rollin
