Newb questions about flashes

So far I have no external flash for my Pentax but there are times when one would be very handy. I have a Canon Speedlite 430EZ from my film SLR days and while it has endured some battery leak years ago, it seems to function fine. However, I know I can't use it on my Pentax directly but would like to hear of other options.

Could I have the Speedlite on some external wireless/slave system that would make it fire with the Pentax built-in flash? Or if that is not possible, would that scenario work using a Metz 58 or Pentax 540 on the camera instead of the built-in one?

What are the recommended wired or wireless methods and equipment for using such external flashes? Hopefully no need to sell a kidney for financing one.
