one flash, corded. still have good photos?

to sum up, i'm quite poor (money isn't my friend these days lol) so i'm quite limited to what i can purchase. sure i'd like to have an alien bees 1600 with octobox and all that jazz, but right now i'm working with just my one flash unit and a sync cord. yes i know i'm living in the stone ages, but that's what i have at the moment and all i can really afford :P

so, who has had amazing shots with one flash source in here? i'd really like to see some so i know it's possible hehe thinking of getting an umbrella as well, but then i'd most likely want to use the flash wirelessly, but my k100d is lame in that situation heh time upgrade to the k-7

Here Is My Strobist Example

Here is a quick shot that I did of my 2 girls with just a Vivitar 285HV on a lightstand with an umbrella. Shot with the K100D, FA50 and Cactus radio triggers. You could have done the exact same thing with a synch cord as well.

Lame excuse. Read Strobist and read lighting 101. You can do plenty with a single flash off camera. I shoot with a K100DS, and with wireless triggers, it works great.

Some of what I've managed to take using a single $10 Pentax AF200T and using a single $30 Pentax AF280T

And check the Flickr group One Strobe Pony for over 19,000 examples of what can be done with one strobe.

One flash off camera can do wonders.
Another novice here at it but I've been reasonably impressed by the results I get from the set up.

From a recent outdoor photoshoot with wireless flash set up behind a shoot-through umbrella:

Appreciate your kind compliments Rob.
There's so much to being a pro - I take my hat off to what they do day in day out.
For me, I'm OK with my day job, though, and just enjoying the vocation in my spare time...

not even sure i even wanna share, because the website i ordered from takes forever to ship out, i had the umbrella refused at customs for bad sender info, and apparently the website doesn't refund shipping which they paid, so i may be charged something. totally lame. i say go with ebay, i ordered a bunch of items, and all shipped within a day or two.

You can do pretty well with one flash. Don't think of it as just being one light source though -- if you use a large window, or the sun, or reflective walls properly, you can surround a subject with light.

Both of these were shot with a single flash (a Metz 60) shooting into an umbrella.
Forgive the flaws in the first shot, I did a Q&D scan from an old work print.

There's lots of stuff you can do with 1 flash!
If you balance it with the ambient it can be a real extra value to your shots.

Most important things to have in my opinion:
- something to trigger it wirelessly
- an umbrella

Some of mine:

And this one even won a prize

one flash setup:
(and just to reiterate what alohadave said - a k7 won't help you do off-camera flash pictures any better - you need to read up and practice with what you've got. Hell if money isn't your friend upgrading your lighting (triggers, modifiers, etc) is a much cheaper solution anyway.
