Sigma 530 DGSuper or Metz 48 AF1 for K20D??

Title says it all. They're about the same price, so, which is better for my K20D and why??

Thanks for any opinions offered!

There is a flash guide and that may help you (don't know the link)

Anyways, the guide basically says that most Metz flashes are slightly higher priced than in Europe. Also, the Metz doesn't have that much power (about the same as the 360FGZ) while the Sigma gives almost the same power as the 540FGZ but with longer range (up to 105mm instead of 85mm).

So IMO, Sigma 530DG Super > Metz 48

i don't think sigma has more power than metz - inspite of the gn metz gives more... pay attention at the many posts about haw sigma works - there is lot of problems: fickled, quality of work, wireless mode is just lotery, overexposing etc... i had sigma 500 for 2 years - 3 times at the servise, still shows same flaws i can count them to eternity. In my opinion metz works the same way as pentax flashes do. You can buy af360 and use it with bracket anyway.

I have three Sigma flashes, and the only problem I ever had was when I dropped one on Hard floor. The large panel came off, but pushing it back in, I could finish the job with the same flash. Highly recommended.

Only if you don't know numbers. 48 is hardly the same as 36. In fact, the difference between Metz 48 and Pentax 360 is bigger than the difference between Metz 48 and Sigma 530.

IMO it's the opposite.

I guess I'll stick with my Quantaray (Sunpak) modular setup right now. It's good to about 90'-or-so, but doesn't have P-ttl or any of the other nice features of the Sigma and Metz.

I have a metz 48 and I highly recommend it. And Simico is correct. The Metz 48 AF-1 is more powerful than the 360 at the same price, this is the reason why I bought the 48 AF-1 over the 360. Plus the Metz 48 AF-1 has a lot of good reviews and that is also why I bought it.

Here are some pictures using my Metz 48 in daylight to brighten the darkness so I don't have to overblow my skies.

Thanks for the input, guys, particularly the pics and comments from LeDave. I don't doubt the quality of Metz, but the power of the Sigma seems a little greater, so I was trying to get some input as to why one would pick one over the other. Are there features of one that make it superior to the other?

Will be used on a K20D.

My Sigma's a terrible piece of equipment. Granted, I haven't had much experience with flashguns, but looking at it from a general construction/design standpoint, it's terrible.

I haven't used it in so long, I can't even remember what model number it is exactly. "5xx DG Super", cannot recall what the xx digits are. I bought in 2008, I think, if that helps.

Main problem: unable to take more than about 2 flash photos per minute. Why? Because the zoom head gets jammed. A buzzing noise, overlayed with nice clicking and grinding sounds. My theory is that the rails the strobe rides on get overheated by the strobe, expand, and jam.

At the outset, sure, you can fire off as many frames per minute at leisure, but don't expect for that to last for more than, oh, about five minutes. Sometimes you can fix it by flicking it in your hand down towards the ground - think of flicking an old mercury medical thermometer - or by tapping it against your head (like all those soldiers in the Vietnam war movies do with their M16 magazines.)

Secondly, on my K100D, the random "Er" message pops up with alarming frequency. I understand that an error has occurred. I have no idea what said error is, nor what I do to cause it, as it's happened in a variety of situations, sometimes after quite a few frames, sometimes after three or so. The only thing I've been doing that I can think of that causes an error is using the flash. Problem fixed by giving up on flash photography.

Thirdly - I've seen better battery hatches on marital aids.

As an aside, anyone want to buy a Sigma flash?

Ordered the Metz last night, from Adorama, via Amazon. Being shipped today, should arrive by Fri/Sat. Metz looks like a better-made unit to me.

Thanks again, for all the input. Metz came in today, a couple of days earlier than expected. Been playing around with Metz/K20D/Sigma 2.8 70-200 HSMII lens. Loving this setup! Glad I picked Metz!

I bought one the other day too. The only thing I've read that I'm worried about is that the Metz supposedly wont support a GF Lightsphere because the locking mechanism isnt strong enough. I'll definitely comment on this when I get one.

just wanted to update: really impressed with my Metz, I ended up calling Adorama last minute and requesting the Sto-Fen instead of the Gary Fong because I was apprehensive of a possible equipment failure at a wedding. That being said, I didn't think the mechanism was "loose" by any means, although I don't have much to compare it to, and have never owned a Lightsphere. The build quality of the flash unit was great, and it had seemingly flawless and simple performance as well.
