Metz 36 ; manual lens; K10d, won't flash

I expect this is blindingly obvious to every one but me but with a Metz 36 flash which has no settings at all how do you use it with M series lens on K10D
The flash works 100% ok with any full auto focus lens and with my "A" type lens but if you change the aperture to manual the flash does not go off.
I have a old AF160 which works on the manual settings and on the whole the table info on the back is usable and produces usable images but there obvious drawbacks to this flash, so I thought a cheap metz would do and allow for bounce and be a bit more powerfully.
have I bought the wrong flash for manual lenses?
Alistair
