I use external flash, usually on camera,

For indoors, it is bounced, outdoors it is direct but for fill flash only (people, groups etc), or used with a better beamer flash extender and my SMC 300mm FG4 and 1.7x AF TC on wild life shots.

I find it difficult to get a lot of shots in the woods without it because the foliage is too dense to allow for the light to come through, and even when foliage is less dense , the light has a green cast.

Do you use an external flash? yes
if so, in what situation and will you use it and what technique? when it will improve the photo and isn't disallowed for some reason. I typically use it off-camera and have been known to mount it to the tripod instead of the camera. Or I'll use it on-camera with a Better Beamer. All decisions depend on the shot.
and what flash? AF360FGZ
if not, do what are your ways in dealing w/ low light? depends on what I'm photographing. I'd rather increase iso than use a shallower dof in most cases. Limited focus can be overdone and while it plays well on photo boards, it's not seen as "art" by most viewers.

Honestly it's like anything else in photography - you decide what you want to show, and do what it takes to show it. It's a tool, not rocket science. The tools work flawlessly; training the photographer (me) is what's taken time and practice.

I use my Metz 58 indoors only. Usually ceiling bounce with a diffuser to fill in the shadows behind the people and to decrease the shutter speed.

Other use that I have had for it is in macro photography, using the Manfrotto macro bracket. I have tried it only a few times though.

I try not to use any flash but i still answered "yes" because i do have external flashes that i used when shooting film scenes of sunset portraits so i needed to balance skin tones with background.

I just picked up a new Metz 48 AF-1 on friday (19th Feb) and will use it for indoor/people shots and outdoor fill flash when I learn how to use it properly.
Need to get a small defuser for it now.

Is there a thread in here that you can post photos taken by using an external flash or other lighting just like those of the lens club in the lens section? It might be helpful to for someone new to flashes who dont know what to buy

I use a Metz 48 AF1 with Sto-Fen diffuser on and off camera mainly for real estate shoots. I find flash to wash out the photo, but illuninate the room with more detail. I then shoot a same setting non flash/ambient light photo and overlay it with the flash photo in photoshop at 50-70% opacity. This gives a well lit image with good ambient overtones.
