K-x & AF360 flash - shutter speed 1/15 or 1/30... always

Let me preface my question by stating that I am only a very basic flash user...

I just migrated from a K2000 to a K-x. On the occasions I used my AF360 flash with the K2000, it was typically in HSS mode, sometimes for fill and sometimes for general illumination, and I'd have reported shutter speeds of 1/200s, 1/400s, etc. However, using identical settings with my new K-x, the reported shutter speed is *always* either 1/15s or 1/30s. Shooting in Av mode. Images show about the same exposure as they did with the K2000.

If I switch to Tv and set the shutter to, say, 1/500s, the flash will fire at 1/500s. But go back to Av, and I'm stuck at either 1/15s or 1/30s.

Help?

Are you in HSS mode for sure on your K-x?
Being stuck at 1/15-1/30 tells me your lens is something like a 12-24 or 17-50. Is that right? If so, your camera in Av mode thinks it should maximise shutter opening time without compromising camera shake when exposing for ambient light settings. Unless HSS mode is on, and functional, this shutter speed won't exceed 1/FL.

Yup, you're close, I'm using the 18-55 kit lens ATM. HSS is definitely on with the AF360 flash - there is no camera setting for HSS.

In fact, when I switch to Tv and set the shutter to 1/500s, the display panel on the flash says "HS".

Perhaps the mystery is why the K2000 did not behave this way.

Nor does the K20D/K10D act that way.
Once HSS switch is on, the camera immediately adjusts shutter speed to exceed flash sync speed according to ambient lighting conditions.
Perhaps a nuance of the K-x that someone else can verify?
